Croydon University Hospital UNISON Branch Secures Landmark Agreement for Healthcare Support Workers
Croydon University Hospital UNISON Branch is proud to announce a major victory for Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Croydon Health Services NHS Trust and UNISON. This agreement marks a significant step forward in recognising the evolving roles and contributions of HCSWs across the Trust.
The MoU, signed after months of dedicated negotiation led by the Croydon University Hospital UNISON Branch, confirms that HCSWs whose roles have developed beyond their original job descriptions will be regraded to Band 3, with backpay dating back to 1st August 2021.
Key terms of the agreement include:
- Regrading to Band 3 for eligible HCSWs, acknowledging the increased complexity and responsibility of their roles.
- Backpay from 1st August 2021, or from the employee’s start date if later, calculated in line with Agenda for Change pay awards and progression.
- No financial detriment for staff whose regrading does not immediately result in higher earnings—previous salary levels will be protected.
- Option to opt-out for staff who prefer to remain in Band 2 roles, without losing entitlement to backpay.
- Appeals process in place for any disputes regarding backpay calculations or regrading dates.
UNISON is pleased to confirm that affected staff will receive their uplift and backpay in their October or November pay packets, following completion of the consultation and administrative processes.
David Burgess, Branch Secretary of the Croydon University Hospital UNISON Branch, said:
“This agreement is a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of recognising the real value of our members’ work. Our HCSWs have gone above and beyond to deliver outstanding patient care, and this MoU ensures they are fairly rewarded for their dedication.”
The Branch extends its thanks to all members who contributed to this campaign and to the Trust for engaging constructively to reach this positive outcome.
